Between 2013 and 2016, Mark collaborated with well-known guitarist Dan Leonard in a group they called No Explanations. Together, they produced three CD’s and a documentary DVD: Round Trip, The Making of an Artist, which has premiered in film festivals all over the world and been translated into both Italian and Polish. It was during his time with Dan Leonard that Mark’s oldest daughter, Shani, became interested in Irish dance. She joined a fledgling school started by two sisters, Allanah and Ellen Boyle. Mark worked directly with the Boyle sisters, creating and producing their method books, and recording traditional Irish music for their teaching CDs, which included their own patented steps so that their students could “take the teacher home,” as the steps and rhythms were called out over the music by either Ellen or Allanah.
Mark's books and CDs were a new idea in the Irish dance world, and one that catapulted several students to new levels, including Shani, who placed 6th in the Southern Region of Irish dancers, qualified for the World Irish Dancing Championships in Ireland, was invited to the All Ireland Feis, and was granted a special opportunity for a clinic on the original Riverdance Stage in Dublin, Ireland. Ultimately, Shani received her T.C.R.G. certification and she has since become a well-qualified and reputable Irish dance instructor in her own right. Under Mark’s tutelage, Allanah was able to learn the inner workings of music, in particular the finer points of Irish dance rhythms, and she was able to become an accredited judge in the Irish dance world. Allanah shared Mark’s notes and ideas with her sister Ellen, who later became a certified judge as well.
As the Boyle School was beginning to excel, Mark was also excelling in his own career with his band, No Explanations. His immersion in Irish culture culminated with his release of Joie de Vivre. Joie de Vivre featured his daughter, Shani, who sang the title track and performed her own dance steps as percussion for several of Mark’s pieces. The unique recording was featured in Irish Dance and Culture Magazine, (May 2015) and continues to sell to this day, having reached beyond the Irish dance world and into the European community of eclectic and world music.
