Mark Christopher Brandt

Pianist Composer Improvisor Educator Author

"We get one life. It's up to us to find the reason for our existence and to bring joy and light to those around us who have not yet discovered theirs."
~ Mark Christopher Brandt

Mark Christopher Brandt (born February 2, 1961) is an American musical composer, improvisor, educator and spiritual writer with 17 albums to his credit, four DVD’s, numerous performance credentials and 3 published books on spirituality, two of which have received ecclesiastical approval from the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia.

Mark’s CD’s have sold all over the world and his documentary DVD titled “Round Trip: The Making of an Artist,” has been viewed in film festivals in Europe and it has been translated into Italian and Polish.

His credits as a musical artist and an educator are wide-ranging from tutoring Irish Dancers, forming and grooming professional jazz and classical pianists and composers to teaching church pianists and praise and worship musicians of all denominations.

Since 1991 Mark has operated a successful private instruction studio, built solely on word-of-mouth advertising. In 2011, he received the Virginia Governor's School Award for exemplary service and dedication to education. Many of Mark's students have achieved high honors and scholarships at both the high school and the collegiate level. Many have successful careers in the music industry as performers, educators, producers, and engineers.

As an eclectic and gifted improvising pianist and composer, Mark has kept regular performances at every major and minor venue in the Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Maryland tri-state area both as a sideman, and as a leader of his own groups dating back to 1977.

This bio was compiled from verified, reliable sources, multiple articles and interviews.

Beginnings

Promo Photo (c. 1979)

Mark’s first musical performance was during his sixth grade year at an assembly for his elementary school. At the request of his music teacher, Mark performed an original composition, Heartbeat, and there discovered his desire to share what was occurring within him musically. Like all accomplished composers and instrumentalists, Mark honed his skills performing as a side man and an accompanist for many years. Since his first professional performance in 1977, Mark has shared the bandstand with a variety of artists, from the famous to the obscure, in performances on television, in theaters, large and small venues of every kind and in every genre of music. Before graduating high school in 1979, Mark was already an experienced performer and had appeared at some of the major venues in the Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, Maryland area, including the Main Stage at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia. The United States Navy Band Commodores sent a recruiter to Mark but he respectfully declined their offer hoping for a deeper artistic freedom than a career in the military would ultimately provide him with. As Mark’s time in high school came to a close, most of his teachers and peers did not know that he was already playing professionally with a reputable jazz and pop group, and was working as a freelance keyboardist as well. Mark made a brief entry into the world of rock music with a group comprised of his high school bandmates on guitar, bass, and drums, with Mark on keyboards and lead vocals. Their one and only performance was in the Chantilly High School Talent Show. They won first place in the band category, performing Stairway to Heaven, by Led Zepplin, Don’t Fear the Reaper, by Blue Oyster Cult, and an original jazz rock tour de force, Now that You’re Gone, composed by all of the members. In a nod to Mark’s future desires to excel as an artist but not seek name recognition, the band was called The No Name Band.

Education and Formation

HAND IN HAND - OUTDOOR CHARITY CONCERT WASHINGTON D.C. (C. 1980)

As Mark began his musical studies at the college level, he entered the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. (1979 -1982), as a piano performance major, playing the masterworks of Bach, Beethoven and Chopin. With the start of his third year, however, he felt the call to switch his major to composition. At that time, the dean of the school of composition was nationally renown author and educator, George Thaddeus Jones, who wrote what some have called the definitive book on Music Theory (1974). Glancing over Mark’s portfolio, Jones told him that he clearly knew what he was doing, and with that, Mark began the formal study of composition. While attending Catholic University of America, Mark was actively performing with many of the East Coast’s most reputable musicians, in almost every jazz club that was open for business. The group with which Mark regularly performed was the opening act for several nationally recognized bands, including Tim Eyermann and the East Coast Offering, and Maynard Ferguson’s Big Band. As his work as a professional musician increased, Mark felt the need for a hiatus from his musical studies. After about a year off, he decided to complete his education at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts (1983-1984). Upon arriving in 1984, Mark tested out of their entire undergraduate harmony and theory programs, and began his studies under the tutelage of renown composer Ken Pulig. While attending Berklee College of Music, Mark’s talents were noticed by many faculty members, who invited him to sessions with them and with other students, who, like Mark, would go on to achieve successful careers in music. Upon completing his education at Berklee, Mark left the Boston area, settling in central Florida. While playing in Florida, Mark became a member of a prominent group playing Top 40’s hits and country music. As the group grew in popularity (1985), the opportunity to sign with a label in Nashville appeared. Mark passed on the offer, remaining focused on his personal dream of being a composer and a performer of his own music, free from category and genre. In an attempt to gain objectivity, Mark left that group and moved to Georgia, where he packed up his musical gear and worked odd jobs in order to gain a fresh view of his artistic options. It was during this time that he met his future wife Ramonie. They were married in April of 1989.

Syncron - Jazz Fusion

MARK W/BAND MATE GEOFF THALER (C.1984) LAUNDRY-MATT NEAR BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC BOSTON, MA.

When Mark’s long-time friend Geoff Thaler (woodwinds) discovered that Mark was not attached to a group, he invited him to come back to the Northern Virginia area, which Mark did in December of 1986. The two immediately began working together professionally and started to collaborate in the realization of their life-long dream of playing and recording their own music. In March 1987, they debuted compositions from both their portfolios at Blues Alley, Washington D.C., in a fusion/funk group, Syncron. Shortly after this performance, Mark and Geoff replaced their rhythm section with two phenomenal musicians (Dallas Smith, electric bass and Stan McMullen, drums) who would work with them for the next eight years.

Recording Artist

RECORDING SESSION AT BIAS STUDIOS SPRINGFIELD, VA (C. 1995)

By 1991, Mark again became known as one of the top jazz musicians in the tri-state area and was starting to gain national attention. Hoping to breach the his fears of launching himself as an artist under his own name, Mark released a recording of his jazz trio (Warmup 1994) for limited circulation. The hint of success it brought was all he needed to move forward with his own music. By 1995, Mark’s first recording of originals - a duo project with longtime friend and woodwind master Geoff Thaler - was completed and titled Veritas. This became the catalyst for two more projects, (In Spirit and Suite For a Fish Out of Water) and multiple performances with Geoff.

Producing for Others

Non Nobis Domine: Released August 4, 1997

In 1997 Mark was asked by a fellow parishioner at his church if he would coordinate and produce a recording for nearby Seton High School. He willingly provided the equipment, the engineer, and the recording setup for the Shrine in Emmitsburg, Maryland organized and ran the mastering session at Slipped Disc in Ashland, Virginia and was the liaison between the designers of the cover and the manufacturing company that pressed the project.

The first pressing of hard copies was managed by Mark with all of the proceeds from sales given directly to Seton High School. Mark accepted a one-time payment for this project. “Producing the Non Nobis CD," says Mark, "remains to this day one of the greatest musical experiences I have ever had. The privilege of being so close to this beauty and to be granted participation in this undertaking was a profound gift from God.“

Non Nobis Domine is one of the best-selling Catholic music CDs of all time and it is still available for purchase.

Record Label Owner/Producer

RECORDING AT SLIPPED DISC

As well-known jazz labels, and national artists began to take notice of Mark and his music, he began studying his options and learning more about the music business. Mark ultimately decided to start his own independent record label and produce, release, promote and sell his recordings under that banner. Before the Internet became the glut of music that it has been since the late 90’s, Mark’s music was selling all over the globe.

To this day he is still selling his music online under his own label, Lionheart Music East, with seventeen projects to his name. After his 1999/2000 New Year’s performance at the Cosmos Club in Washington D.C., Mark decided to step away from performing so that he could be close to his wife and to his children during their young years. During this break, he built one of the most reputable teaching studios on the East Coast, regularly placing students with scholarships into the top music colleges and universities in America.

Music Educator and Clinician

CLINIC AT CHS (C. 2009)

From 2008 until 2014, Mark was a sponsor for the annual Chantilly High School Invitational Jazz Festival. The festival, which for over 35 years took place at Chantilly High School in Virginia, was, at the time of Mark’s arrival and his departure as sponsor, the largest of its kind on the East Coast.

Mark remains at the top of the list as the “go to” instructor for piano, composition and improvisation lessons for all instruments. His students include many of the Washington, D.C. area's professional musicians, seeking him out for polish and refinement of their improvisational skills.

Jazz Trios, Duos, and Solos

Nate Panning, Shaun Jurek, Mark (c. 2008)

In 2008, Mark returned to the world of performing with a new jazz trio, and he began to use his middle name, Christopher, professionally on all of his creative works and in all public performances. Christopher comes from the Greek name, Christophoros which means “bearing Christ.” It is derived from Christos combined with phero and translates literally as “Christ bearer,” or “one who carries Christ.” At this time in his career Mark decided that he did not want to be known simply as an artist - but as an artist who carries Christ.

After the release of Mark's Jazz Trio recording titled, Worth The Wait (2010), Mark and bassist Shaun Jurek became the East Coast Duo, moving successfully into the club, hotel, and private party circuit that Mark trafficked as a young jazz pianist in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and again in the late 90’s before his 2000 hiatus.

Adding a drummer for a second trio CD, this one of Christmas classics, December Moment (2014) received a glowing review from Downbeat Magazine. Mark and Shaun began to fill the calendar year with performance after performance, becoming one of the most respected and most working jazz groups on the East Coast. The East Coast Duo remained active until the spring of 2020 when the pandemic caused the two musicians to amiably disband.

While collaborating with multiple artists and performing with the East Coast Duo, Mark released a double CD of piano solos, This Side of Forever (2012), and two completely Improvised solo piano recordings, Seven Moons (2015) and Seven Gifts (2016), which feature the music he created on the spot with cameras rolling in his educational DVD series on improvisation.

No Explanations: Eclectic Jazz Fusion
Irish Dance and Everything in Between

Shani DuFrain, Mark, Guitarist Dan Leonard (c. 2014)

Between 2013 and 2016, Mark collaborated with well-known guitarist Dan Leonard in a group they called No Explanations. Together, they produced three CD’s and a documentary DVD: Round Trip, The Making of an Artist, which has premiered in film festivals all over the world and been translated into both Italian and Polish. It was during his time with Dan Leonard that Mark’s oldest daughter, Shani, became interested in Irish dance. She joined a fledgling school started by two sisters, Allanah and Ellen Boyle. Mark worked directly with the Boyle sisters, creating and producing their method books, and recording traditional Irish music for their teaching CDs, which included their own patented steps so that their students could “take the teacher home,” as the steps and rhythms were called out over the music by either Ellen or Allanah.

Mark's books and CDs were a new idea in the Irish dance world, and one that catapulted several students to new levels, including Shani, who placed 6th in the Southern Region of Irish dancers, qualified for the World Irish Dancing Championships in Ireland, was invited to the All Ireland Feis, and was granted a special opportunity for a clinic on the original Riverdance Stage in Dublin, Ireland. Ultimately, Shani received her T.C.R.G. certification and she has since become a well-qualified and reputable Irish dance instructor in her own right. Under Mark’s tutelage, Allanah was able to learn the inner workings of music, in particular the finer points of Irish dance rhythms, and she was able to become an accredited judge in the Irish dance world. Allanah shared Mark’s notes and ideas with her sister Ellen, who later became a certified judge as well.

As the Boyle School was beginning to excel, Mark was also excelling in his own career with his band, No Explanations. His immersion in Irish culture culminated with his release of Joie de Vivre. Joie de Vivre featured his daughter, Shani, who sang the title track and performed her own dance steps as percussion for several of Mark’s pieces. The unique recording was featured in Irish Dance and Culture Magazine, (May 2015) and continues to sell to this day, having reached beyond the Irish dance world and into the European community of eclectic and world music.

Chamber Music

Mark w/Violist, Jennifer Bockstege and Cellist, Katherine Colburn (c. 2019)

In 2017, Mark began composing music for flutist Yana Nikol, and cellist Katherine Colburn in a programatic collaboration titled The Nightingale (2018). Mark and Yana followed up The Nightingale a year later with both a duo CD, Sunflowers and Roses, and a DVD, Structure and Freedom. Structure and Freedom is the third DVD in Mark’s series on Improvisation.

The collaboration between Mark and Katherine Colburn continued into 2019 with the release of The Butterfly, which also featured the Manassas String Quartet of which Colburn is a founding member. Mark continues to compose music for Katherine Colburn and other professional cellists. Mark is a prolific composer and many of his string ensemble compositions have not yet been recorded or performed publicly.

Sacred Music and a Return to Roots

Mark w/his Three daughters, Shani, Ko, and Rita recording Joy (c. 2020)

In October of 2021, Mark released Joy, a work of sacred music with themes inspired by the Joyful mysteries of the Rosary. The recording features Mark’s compositional skills in traditional Latin choir settings, large choir works, and simple praise and worship songs for voice and piano. Mark sings lead vocals on many of the pieces, and he is accompanied and beautifully surrounded by his three daughters, who are accomplished musicians and singers in their own right.

Faith and Works

Mark and Ramonie (C. 1992)

Since December 25, 1991 Mark has been a follower of Jesus Christ and His teachings, as found in the Catholic Church. He considers the use of his middle name crucial to both his public and private life. Mark has remained a Catholic in Good Standing at All Saints Parish in Northern Virginia since he became a member of that Parish in 1991.

In the first few years of the new millennium, Mark was asked to lead the Holy Rosary at All Saints on Saturday mornings. He has been leading the Rosary in his parish every Saturday morning since he was first asked to do so in 2003, and in 2016 his Rosary meditations were approved by the Catholic Diocese of Arlington and published in a book titled A Year of Favor. This book was followed by a book of Mark’s meditations on the Stations of the Cross, also published with ecclesiastical approval and titled His Footsteps Your Calvary.

In 2023 both Mark and his wife, Ramonie became volunteer sacristans at their parish, and in 2024 they were selected by the pastor to participate in a ministry for couples seeking marriage in the catholic church. They offer the couples guidance, counsel, support and prayer. In 2024 they were again chosen to become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

Mark and his wife of 35 years have four children, all of whom, like their parents, are practicing and participating members of All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas, Virginia.

No Retirement in Sight

2025 →

At 64, Mark has no intentions of slowing down or becoming complacent. He is still accepting music students privately through word-of-mouth referrals, and he has entered into a new period of artistic growth as both a pianist and a composer which has inspired him to completely remove himself from all social media platforms with the exception of those stations where a streaming presence is automatic through his association with CD Baby, Amazon and iTunes.

While Mark’s Internet presence is minimal, his downloads continue to sell worldwide, and his hard copies are like fine wines that become more valuable as the years pass. Mark is currently tight - lipped about his next music project and any potential performances on the horizon.

How to Play the Blues
When You Don't Have Them

During Mark’s years as a clinician in participation with high schools, colleges and private students he authored a very successful teaching method titled How to Play the Blues When You Don’t have Them. The last copy of this book sold in 2020 and it is no longer available for purchase.

Due to a resurgence in demand for his authentic and down to earth approach to music theory and all things jazz, blues and improvisation, Mark has produced the book in a video series that can now be seen on YouTube for FREE. Visit him at Mark's Theory.com to learn more.

The true musical artist is comprised not simply of one personality but three:

The Improvisor/Composer, the Performer/Recording artist and the Permanent student/Educator.

If one of these is missing or derelict in any one artist, the art form of music suffers wherever that particular artist treads.

Procrastination is the deadly enemy of the artist. There are one million well described reasons why you can not practice today. There is one reason alone why you will. You love it. If that love is not there then you are not an artist.

Mark's Theory VIdeos

If an artist truly recognizes the origin of his music, he has no need of human validation. He requires only a place to pray, to practice and to create and the trust to remain in that place with love, joy, and gratitude.

In due time, God opens the venues and brings forth the listeners to receive each artist that He has created.

I believe that every inspiration, every good idea, every cool thought, every insight into theory, every beautiful piece of music, every great performance, every successful recording, all my gifts of soul and all my temporal goods to enable me to share these gifts with the world have been offered to me and placed in me by a loving, omnipotent, all powerful and Triune God.

While I may not state this in every video I place on YouTube or every piece of music I place on my website, I believe with all my heart and moreover, I know this to be true.

I also believe it to be true about each and every individual on the planet, whether we admit it, acknowledge it or accept it.

God is the Creator. I am the creature.

As of 2024 Mark’s presence online is minimal by his own choice. In recent years he removed all of his social media accounts so that he could begin a new approach to his artistic career.

You can now hear all of his music for free on Spotify (and pandora). Mark continues to sell hard copies of his CD’s and downloads as well, but he remains uncommitted as to when he might perform in public again and in what musical configuration or outlet that might be.
