Released May 13, 2016

This is piano and guitar jazz at its best. Every song was created in the studio, on the spot while the tape was rolling. Guitarist Dan Leonard and pianist Mark Christopher Brandt are at times, like one person. Both display freedom of spirit and knowledge of the jazz and contemporary music language. This is a must own for lovers of jazz and blues.

Seven Gifts

Released January 1, 2016

This is Mark’s second set of completely improvised piano music performed with no preparation and boldly displayed as in the days of the two-track recording process employed by the first jazzers. Like Seven Moons, all 8 tracks were lifted directly from the DVD of the same name. These pieces stand as compositions that sound well thought out and practiced. They were created on the spot and no editing took place.

Seven Gifts will be streaming for FREE on Spotify in February 2025!

Portuguese Fado, Spanish, Irish, jazz and classical styles appear at a moment’s notice and are seamlessly delivered by violinist, Emily Wellington, guitarist, Dan Leonard and Pianist Mark Christopher Brandt. The title track is a haunting melody with lyrics composed by Brandt and sung by his daughter, Shani DuFrain, a professional Irish dancer who also contributed percussion on two tracks with hand claps and Irish dance steps.

Seven Moons

Released January 1, 2015

Seven Moons is a complete set of eight piano improvisations by Mark which were lifted from the DVD of the same name. The interaction between camera man, engineer and pianist has been removed, leaving a smooth and peaceful recording of piano music that will leave the listener who has not seen the video to believe that these pieces were well thought out and practiced compositions. They are not. All eight tracks were composed on the spot with no editing.

December Moment

Released November 30, 2014

Excerpts from Downbeat Magazine's review of December Moment by Bobby Reed:

Pianist Mark Christopher Brandt, bassist Shaun Jurek and drummer Russell Lucas have crafted a peaceful album that combines religious and secular tunes. Brandt wrote all the arrangements, adding surprising twists and fluid improv segments.

The title track, which is the only original tune here, was spontaneously composed in the studio and illustrates the musicians' simpatico approach. This is a fine album for nighttime listening, when you're in the mood to relax and reflect, long after the kids have gone to slumberland.

Round Trip

Released March 22, 2014

This was the first outing for No Explanations and it showcases the versatility of Mark's skills as a composer and the equally versatile skills of guitarist Dan Leonard. There are multiple guitars featured on this recording and Leonard is not simply strumming along with Mark. He proves to be a virtuoso on each guitar chosen for the project.

Round Trip features tracks recorded in1997 combined with new tracks recorded for this 2013 session. All of the songs blend seamlessly and sound as though they were recorded at the same time. As is the case with most all of Mark's recorded works the tracks from 1997 and the tracks from 2013 were recorded in one take with no editing.

This Side of Forever

Released January 1, 2012

This Side of Forever marked the return to the artistic arena for Mark Christopher Brandt after an eight-year hiatus from performing and recording. Although it was released after Worth the Wait (2010), it was recorded during the same year but held back from release to allow the trio recording to grow legs.

This Side of Forever brings both the old and the new with it. It is a double CD release containing the tracks from his 1999 solo piano recording Contemplation, as well as a disc of newly created solo piano pieces.

This Side of Forever was recorded in one session and all of the pieces are unedited first takes. The same is true for Contemplation, recorded eight years earlier.

Worth The Wait

Released September 22, 2010

Worth the Wait is a straight-ahead jazz trio album featuring 6 unique compositions unlike any other jazz offerings out there while remaining true to the tradition and the individuality that this art form demands.

The title is a reference to pianist, Mark Christopher Brandt's dream of entering into the studio with a jazz trio. It documents the culmination of a lifelong dream. The trio featured on this album (bassist, Shaun Jurek and drummer, Nate Panning) was the work horse undergirding Mark's career as they were in demand for clubs, society gigs, weddings, clinics and everything in between from Delaware to North Carolina for almost 10 years.

Two alternate takes of the title track, featuring completely different improvised solos from the pianist, bear witness to Mark’s ability to truly create spontaneously.

In spirit

Released March 25, 1996

Upon completion of Veritas, multi-reed player Geoff Thaler and pianist Mark Christopher Brandt put together a powerful electric band featuring Dallas Smith on electric bass and Stan McMullen on drums. This band recorded Mark's next two albums.

While Mark’s multi keyboard and arranging skills are notable, equally notable is the fact that all of the ensemble tracks, including the improvised solos, were recorded in one take, making this album a “live” studio recording of incredible energy with an appropriate title.

You can listen to this album FREE on Spotify under the release titled "In the Company of Sharks."

Veritas

Released May 1, 1995

Veritas is an instrumental work featuring pianist/composer Mark Christopher Brandt and multi-reed player Geoff Thaler. After years of group playing as a sideman, having only released one project as a leader before Veritas, Mark set out into uncharted territory to find his voice as a solo pianist performing his own originals.

Mark used the material of Veritas to explore and develop his rhythmic concept while intentionally distancing himself from the standard left hand formulas employed by classical and jazz pianists. The result is both unique and ethereal.

Warmup

Released May 1, 1994

Warmup was Mark's first recording as a leader. It was released on cassette tape and sold locally in the Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia region of the East Coast.

This set of jazz standards featuring Glenn Harris on upright bass and Stan McMullen on drums was recorded live 12/15/91 on a dual cassette deck boom box in the lounge of a hotel in Northern Virginia. It was then mastered to DAT at Bias Recording Studios Inc. on April 20, 1994.

Warmup is out of print and not available for purchase.

Private Lessons

Mark Christopher Brandt has operated a successful private instruction studio, built solely on word-of-mouth advertising, since 1991. In 2011, he received the Virginia Governor's School Award for exemplary service and dedication to education. Many of Mark's students have achieved high honors and scholarships at both the high school and the collegiate level. Many have successful careers in the music industry as performers, educators, producers, and engineers.

After his 1999/2000 New Year’s performance at the Cosmos Club in Washington D.C., Mark decided to step away from performing so that he could be close to his wife and to his children during their young years. During this break, he built one of the most reputable teaching studios on the East Coast, regularly placing students with scholarships into the top music colleges and universities in America. After his return to the world of performing and recording Mark’s studio and his reputation as an educator continued to flourish. To this day Mark teaches students from all over the country via zoom, FaceTime and even email. His private instruction studio has remained active and busy since he first opened his doors.

Many of Mark's first students have remained in contact with him over the years. Some of them began with him as children and they now have children of their own.

The true musical artist is comprised not simply of one personality but three:

The Improvisor/Composer, the Performer/Recording artist and the Permanent student/Educator.

If one of these is missing or derelict in any one artist, the art form of music suffers wherever that particular artist treads.

Procrastination is the deadly enemy of the artist. There are one million well described reasons why you can not practice today. There is one reason alone why you will. You love it. If that love is not there then you are not an artist.

Mark's Theory VIdeos

If an artist truly recognizes the origin of his music, he has no need of human validation. He requires only a place to pray, to practice and to create and the trust to remain in that place with love, joy, and gratitude.

In due time, God opens the venues and brings forth the listeners to receive each artist that He has created.

I believe that every inspiration, every good idea, every cool thought, every insight into theory, every beautiful piece of music, every great performance, every successful recording, all my gifts of soul and all my temporal goods to enable me to share these gifts with the world have been offered to me and placed in me by a loving, omnipotent, all powerful and Triune God.

While I may not state this in every video I place on YouTube or every piece of music I place on my website, I believe with all my heart and moreover, I know this to be true.

I also believe it to be true about each and every individual on the planet, whether we admit it, acknowledge it or accept it.

God is the Creator. I am the creature.

As of 2024 Mark’s presence online is minimal by his own choice. In recent years he removed all of his social media accounts so that he could begin a new approach to his artistic career.

You can now hear all of his music for free on Spotify (and pandora). Mark continues to sell hard copies of his CD’s and downloads as well, but he remains uncommitted as to when he might perform in public again and in what musical configuration or outlet that might be.
