Piano Improvisations by Mark Christopher Brandt

Released January 1, 2016

Seven Gifts is the second in a series of four completely spontaneous piano solo recordings by improvising pianist and composer,  Mark Christopher Brandt.  The first DVD was entitled Seven Moons.

On August 22, 2015, Mark went back into the recording studio in Ashland, Virginia with videographer Scott Nurmi of Mojo Factory Productions, and together with Shaun Jurek and recording engineer Bill McElroy of Slipped Disc Audio, they produced this work of art.

As Scott filmed Mark at the piano, Shaun randomly pulled from a bowl pieces of paper with previously written tonal centers on them.  These were the tonal centers not pulled during the recording of Seven Moons.

Mark was told the tonal center in which to spontaneously create a piece of music. Using a stop watch, Mark was given four minutes and thirty seconds to improvise a piece of music.  The entire process was repeated eight times.  In most situations, and during both Seven Moons and Seven Gifts, Mark was absorbed in the process, so the visual cues that Shaun provided for Mark in order to know when it was time for him to fashion an ending were necessary to keep the pieces from running on endlessly.

Track 4, ironically entitled "Courage", is shorter than the rest of the pieces simply because Mark found that the perfect ending was upon him before the cue.  Rather than milk the piece a few measures more for the sake of the clock, Mark stopped in the exact place that he heard the ending come forth.  The explanation in Mark’s own words says it all: “Sometimes, there is no rhyme or reason. You just have to be docile and surrender to the flow.”

In addition to a unique musical experience, this DVD includes an in-depth, and informative essay by Mark on the state of improvisation within the continuum of creative music ranging from the earliest classical composers to present day jazz musicians.  Mark also shares his personal practice approach towards creating this hour of completely spontaneous music, discussing how he balanced between the need for proper preparation and the essential letting go of the universal, yet detrimental need for control of the outcome.

Those who love piano music will be enamored and enthralled with Mark’s “way” of musical expression.  There is no pretension here and no question that he offers all credit, praise, and glory for his gifts to God the Creator.

Piano Improvisations by Mark Christopher Brandt

Released January 1, 2015

Seven Moons is the first in a series of four completely spontaneous piano solo recordings by improvising pianist and composer,  Mark Christopher Brandt.  Subsequent recordings have yet to be named or even conceptualized at this point in time.

On October 7, 2014, Mark went into the recording studio in Ashland, Virginia with videographer Scott Nurmi of Mojo Factory Productions and fellow musicians Shaun Jurek and Russell Lucas, both from the band No Explanations, and with recording engineer, Bill McElroy of Slipped Disc Audio, they produced this work of art.

As Scott filmed Mark at the piano from three different angles, Shaun randomly pulled from a bowl pieces of paper with previously written tonal centers on them.  He then told Russell, sitting next to Mark at the piano, what key Mark was to spontaneously create a piece of music in. Using a stop watch, Russell allowed Mark five minutes to improvise a piece of music.  The entire process was repeated eight times and produced eight pieces of music, all captured on CD and video as it occurred.

Seven Moons is my way of honestly assessing myself as an improviser, a pianist, and a person.  I have long dreamed of doing a completely spontaneous solo piano recording, and I know that I will learn from this and bring what I have learned to subsequent artistic offerings.  It is my intention with this project, and all of my music, to glorify the God who dwells in each of us with the music that He Himself allows to flow through me.”

This DVD is reaching audiences, and individual hearts all over the world.  It is a powerful and compelling documentary that covers Mark’s journey through the maze of his addictive personality to the freedom he discovered on the other side with his faith, his family, and his music.  There are beautiful surprises throughout this DVD for anyone open to receiving them.

The Making of an Artist has been entered, and viewed, in numerous documentary film festivals, and it has been translated into Italian and Polish for the Festival Mirabile Dictu International Catholic Film Festival 2017 in Italy, and the KSF Niepokalana 2017, 32nd International Catholic Film and Multimedia Festival in Poland, respectively.

Uplifting, thought-provoking and sobering, Round Trip, The Making of an Artist brings you an intimate look inside the creative process of Mark Christopher Brandt, a unique American pianist and composer.

Mark provides a motivational and inspirational narrative for each musical track on his Round Trip CD which finds its beginnings in 1997, sixteen years prior to its completion.  The journey to completion of this CD is shared in this documentary.

In July of 2013, Mark entered the recording studio with guitarist Dan Leonard to finish Round Trip, which sparked the formation of No Explanations, an eclectic musical group featuring the duo in a highly creative instrumental music setting.

As Mark welcomes you inside his mind and heart, the magic of improvisational music, coupled with his simple embracing of life’s flow, is captured masterfully by videographer Scott Nurmi of Mojo Factory Productions.

Scott has filmed documentary footage for some of the music world’s most reputable artists, including Jim Carroll and the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra; iconic bassist Stanley Clarke; saxophonist Dave Koz; and the Washington Ballet, to name only a few.

Round Trip, The Making of an Artist is not only a motivational masterpiece for musicians who wish to pursue life in the world of higher art and improvisation, but also for anyone doubting their ability to excel and achieve their dreams in any walk of life.
